Understanding Yourself

This is the first installment of a series on boosting your self-confidence and esteem. The first step to increasing your confidence is gaining a better understanding of yourself.

Most of us are unable to recognize and appropriately deal with our negative emotions. This may be because we have never learned positive ways to manage these feelings. A lot of us choose to deal with these emotions negatively. Some of us try to deny them or shut them off, some of us may have resorted to using cigarettes, alcohol, eating or not eating. Some of us may act on our emotions almost spontaneously and end up saying or doing something that we may regret later. None of these reactions can ever lead to a positive outcome.

The first thing that we must do is realize that while we can’t always control what happens to us, we can certainly control our response to the situation. We can learn to stay calm and manage our feelings. Most of the time our response is based on how we interpret an event and this can be very different in a time when we feel self-confident and good about ourselves rather than when we are feeling low. It is important that we explore and discover what situation triggers an emotional or negative response from us and prepare ourselves on how to handle them.

The four core emotions that everyone deals with are anger, sadness, fear and joy. It is important to explore each (which will do in the next few installments of this series) and to work to moderate them so that you will feel more in control and confident in stressful situations.

Over the next few days we will explore what each of these eomtions are and how they can help us and where they can be harmful as well. Spend some time today evaluating your emotional responses to situations and begin to understand your triggers so you can better prepare ourselves for the future.
