Breaking Out Of The Wintertime Blues
Yesterday I asked you to evaluate if you yourself often finds yourself succumbing to the sadness associated with the change of seasons. If you found that you are having trouble with that sadness then the next few days on this blog are for you.
First things first. This conversation wouldn’t be complete without this disclaimer. If you find that you are experiencing feelings of extreme sadness and depression that you feel powerless to changing or you begin to contemplate hurting yourself or someone else I strongly urge you to seek out the assistance of a mental health professional. These blog posts and the tips written here are not meant to replace medications or therapy. There are many facilities and professionals who are well-equipped to deal with these issues and who can help you along your way. You don’t have to do this alone. There is nothing wrong with needing a little help sometimes.
Now onto those tips….
The first and probably one of the most expensive is light therapy. There are specialized lights that simulate sunshine that you can sit under for a prescribed amount of time (by prescribed I mean determined by your doctor) to aid in boosting the brain chemicals that are lacking in the winter time due to us not being out in the sunshine all of time. Sitting under the light while reading or knitting (one of my favorite winter time activites) may be plenty to give you that boost you are looking for.
The downfall to the light is the price. If you want to be thrifty about it then simply put on some heavy clothing and get out and play in the sunshine. Remember how you used to make giant piles of leaves and play in them for an hour or so… take your allergy pill and get out there and have some fun!!
Tomorrow we will explore other ways to help combat those blues. Tell me how it goes!
